Tractor race

The annual tractor race for the Caltex Boron Cup was set up by Basil's son Gary.

This event was just another extension of marketing and Gary had an excellent rapport with Radio and newspapers who were very supportive. Gary would advise all his media contacts in Wellington, Palmerston North and Masterton. This publicity used to attract visitors to the resort and also helped the store turnover as well as the camping ground. One carnival weekend attracted an estimated 14,000 to the beach.

Tractors were used by many bach owners to take their crayfish pots and families to the rocks at each end of the beach.

The tractor race was a fancy dress affair, lots of masks, balloons and fun.

Some owners were so competitive they sped their tractors up by removing the governors and tuning them to the maximum speed.
